All month long, VibeCheck has been celebrating women from all walks of life in accordance with International Women’s Day on 8 March. Although the month is almost up, we don’t have to stop supporting and empowering women throughout the year.
There are several non-profit organisations in Singapore that provide a safe space for women to support other women who are going through tough times in their lives and if you want to be a part of this community, keep scrolling to find out how you can make a difference.
This council works with more than 60 partner organisations and represents over 600,000 women, serving to unite them to work together for equality across women’s safety, leadership and worth. SCWO has several programmes to aid women who have experienced abuse both physically and online – Star Shelter provides women and children with a safe place to stay with clothes and food provided while the Maintenance Support Group provides free legal support.

This charity tackles issues regarding work opportunities for the underprivileged in Singapore and aims to empower women in achieving financial independence for themselves and their families. Daughters of Tomorrow provides online courses for women aged 20 to 60 and those interested in volunteering can choose to guide and support these women or as a caretaker to children whose mothers have inflexible work arrangements.

There are thousands of domestic helpers in Singapore who left their countries for better financial opportunities here to provide for their children back home. Unfortunately, even after years of service, the money they earned might not be enough due to the high cost of living here. Aidha provides various educational programmes to encourage and teach these strong women how to save, invest and even start their own business.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths for Singaporean women and this agency aims to empower women to take charge of their own health through knowledge about this disease and to detect it faster so they may receive treatment ASAP. Other than providing talks, the agency hosts support groups and it also gives financial support to low-income women for their mammogram screenings and runs a complimentary wig loan programme.

For close to 20 years, this group has supported teenage mothers in decision-making that could change and shape their lives as well as their child. Not only do they have a 24-hour hotline for any expecting mum to call when they need someone to talk to, they also provide financial literacy programmes and workshops to ensure that these young women are prepared for the future.
