Crown Care: What is it and how to achieve lusciously shiny hair

Whip it back and forth.
22 February 2023

When it comes to self-care, our minds go straight to skincare, makeup, shopping, food and more but we tend to neglect one crucial aspect of our being – our hair.

Back in 2022, it was all about bleaching, dyeing and massacring our luscious locs. Now, good hair care is at the forefront of the wellness space. Dubbed as “Crown Care”, Pinterest named it as one of their biggest predictions for 2023 based on the increase in searches revolving around scalp treatments, clean scalp and natural hair mask for growth.

Here at VibeCheck, we got you – here is a fuss-free routine that can be done one to two times a week to help you achieve stronger, healthier and silkier hair.

Step One: Reverse Wash

Yes, you read that right. Those of us with fine hair should definitely give this a shot – after wetting the hair, apply conditioner first instead of shampoo from the scalp all the way to the tips. Massage it in and comb it through to spread the product evenly.

Next, wash it out and then use your favourite shampoo to remove any leftover styling products and the conditioner residue. The benefits of this method includes deep cleansing of the scalp as trace amounts of conditioner can clog up the follicles on our head, plus the conditioner reduces the amount of tugging needed to have a good wash.

Step Two: Hair Mask

Protecting and strengthening the bonds of each strand of hair is up next. There are tons of different products on the market and we are spoiled for choice. Choose one that is the most suitable for your hair, be it bleached, curly, straight or frizzy and follow the brand's instructions.

Hair masks typically contain lipids and other proteins that attach themselves to the hair, filling in any breakages and making the hair much more resilient by fixing the structure.

Step Three: Exfoliate

Our faces and bodies aren't the only parts that could use exfoliation. A scalp treatment typically contains a chemical exfoliant ingredient such as glycolic, salicylic or lactic acid to control oil production, reduce inflammation, alleviate dandruff and increase cell turnover rate, which aids in hair growth.

One additional trick that can also be incorporated into your routine is the use of a derma roller. The micro tears help to improve blood circulation to the scalp and stimulate the follicles, in turn, promoting hair growth.

Step Four: Leave-In Treatment

For those with dry scalps, apply a small amount of hair oil on to the palms of your hands, rub them together for even application and run your fingers through your hair but avoid the roots. This helps to lock in the moisture and prevent the locs from frizzing too much.

On the other hand for those with oily scalps, no fret – try a scalp serum that continues to exfoliate throughout the night or day while it aids to balance oil production. Voilá, gorgeous, shining hair as simple as that.
