The good, the bad and the ugly – 2022 has been one heck of a rollercoaster, jammed pack with tantalising pop culture moments that are too legendary to ever forget. From beloved celebrities on our TV to eccentric social media phenomena, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to replay some of the biggest moments that made our year.

Remember to keep his wife's name out of your mouth. Will Smith’s infamous – and unnecessary – slap will go down in the history books and while the actor has since apologised for his actions, he hasn’t been fully forgiven by comedian Chris Rock and fans across the world.

Trust our favourite fashion and beauty mogul to stun the world with the announcement of her pregnancy with A$AP Rocky in revolutionary style. The singer wanted to show the world that there is no “right” way for an expecting mother to dress and they need not hide their joyous news.

Kim and Kanye officially split in April and soon after, the world discovered that Kim started dating the SNL comedian. Of course, Ye was not pleased and started launching social media attacks at them – threats were also explicitly made towards Davidson, which caused an uproar as Ye had no grounds to be upset at his ex-wife.

The Amber Heard And Johnny Depp Saga

This was the gift that kept on giving across social media platforms. The defamation case was much like a well-written drama-comedy series on any streaming platform, except we didn’t have to pay to watch it. Be it Heard’s wacky behaviour, her lawyers’ incompetence or the slew of celebrities that defended Depp, there is something for everyone’s entertainment.

BTS Takes A Break

The pandemic was seemingly over and hopes of a world tour were soaring high but the mega K-pop group shocked fans around the world with the announcement of a semi-hiatus until 2025, post-National Service. The world mourned and HYBE’s stock plummeted but the guys are still working on solo music with J-Hope and RM releasing their albums and a World Cup anthem by Jungkook.

Barbiecore, ballet core, Wednesday core… The list goes on and on. TikTok has birthed countless micro fashion trends that kept us entertained all year round and our wallets empty. While some are valid such as all-pink ensembles, thanks to Valentino’s Pink PP collection and the upcoming Barbie live action film, others such as gorpcore are simply head scratchers.

After 70 years on the throne, the 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II dies peacefully at Balmoral Castle. While the monarchy may not be everyone’s favourite institution, the Queen’s funeral was viewed by millions around the world and to celebrate her incredible legacy as the longest reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.

Spit gate, Florence Pugh shade and trouble in paradise for Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde? So much went down during the promotion of this film that fans started worrying. Countless videos, articles and TikToks analysed the casts’ body language, what they said or didn’t say and picking sides. After hitting cinemas across the globe, many fans were left disappointed that the drama in real life was much more riveting than the film itself.

Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover

We all laughed when the tech genius and entrepreneur announced his first bid to buy Twitter for US$44 million, thinking it was an overdue April Fools joke. But little did we know the deal would eventually go through, leaving the new age dictator to run amok at the headquarters. Verification symbols were dished out willy nilly, staff were retrenched and now, Musk is stepping down as CEO due to the results of a poll. When will this madness end?

Balenciaga’s Error Of Judgement

The Spanish luxury label is no stranger to the weirdest fashion campaigns but it took things too far with its most recent launch involving children carrying bags shaped as stuffed toys in bondage gear. The Internet revolted against Balenciaga and the photographer who shot the looks and called for the brand’s celebrity friends to evaluate their partnerships with them. Kim Kardashian and Euphoria’s Alexa Demie have since pulled several Balenciaga-heavy images off their Instagram.

In 2022, anything and everything can be classified into “eras”. Seriously, flop era, girlboss era, sad era and so many more. Of course, some videos are made to poke fun at the trend while others are actually pretty sweet as content creators look back at all their blessings and misfortunes throughout this rocky time.
